Late on Sunday night of June 30th, 2024, a fatal accident happened in Clark County, Washington. A 1998 Chevrolet Lumina sedan was driving southbound on State Route 503/Lewisville Highway after 11 pm. It crossed the double solid yellow center line of the road, going into the wrong side of the road and oncoming traffic. Shortly after, the car crashed head-on into another vehicle, a 2016 GMC Acadia. The accident happened near 299th Street and milepost 12 of State Route 503, north of Battle Ground, Washington. Both vehicles were totaled in the accident.
Head-on collisions are among the most destructive types of car accidents, because they involve two vehicles crashing into each other going opposite directions. Even at speeds that aren’t extremely fast, head-on collisions are very dangerous. If two cars crash into each other head-on, both going 40 miles per hour, it’s the equivalent of a car crashing into a wall at 80 miles per hour. The force of a crash such as this causes the vehicle to stop, and the front of it to get crumpled and crushed. As you can imagine, head-on collisions often cause injuries and death.
Unfortunately, that is what happened in this case. D’Antai L. Nelson, the 20-year-old man that was driving the Chevrolet, was killed in the accident. Washington State Patrol found him when they arrived at the crash site around 11:33 at night. Nelson was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the other vehicle, Larissa M. Matson, aged 37, was seriously injured in the accident. She was transported to PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center in Vancouver, Washington for treatment. Both drivers were wearing their seatbelts, and both of them were from Battle Ground, Washington.
D’Antai L. Nelson will be missed by his family and friends. It’s always tragic for such a young life to be cut short. D’Antai went to Battle Ground High School, where he got on the honor roll. No GoFundMe or other ways to help out the family have been posted as of yet.
It is unknown what caused the accident to happen. According to the Washington State Patrol, an investigation is still taking place. It’s possible that Nelson was driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, or perhaps had a medical emergency and lost control of his vehicle. Because it was so late at night, another possibility is that he was exhausted and accidentally fell asleep behind the wheel. Driving while tired can be just as dangerous as driving while inebriated. In any case, officials will likely release the determined cause of the accident soon.

State Route 503 was closed on Sunday night through the early hours of Monday, July 1st. It was blocked off for about four hours so that an investigation could take place. On the Washington State Department of Transportation Traffic Twitter account, they warned drivers to take an alternate route. Traffic was being diverted at 299th Street. They also posted when the road was cleared.
This head-on crash is just another example of a concerning rise in fatal car accidents in Washington State. The number of traffic deaths in our state in 2023 was 810, which is even higher than 2022’s 743 deaths. Data from the annual fatalities report from the state Traffic Safety Commission has exposed this tragic trend. The number of deaths from traffic accidents in 2023 is the most the state has seen in one year since 1990. It’s important to remember that that staggering figure is not just a statistic. Every single one of those 810 was a full person with loved ones, friends, and a life. Their deaths made a huge impact on the lives of the people that knew them.
157 of the people that died in auto accidents were pedestrians, which is a record-breaking amount for one year in Washington. 141 of the people that were killed were motorcyclists, which is also the most that has happened in one year. Almost half of the accidents involved someone driving under the influence, and over a third of them involved speeding. 135 of the fatal crashes involved some driving while distracted, which is about a 36 percent increase from the previous year. All in all, three-fourths of the deaths were caused by reckless and irresponsible driving.
The fact is that most serious crashes are preventable. If drivers were being safe and responsible, many of these people wouldn’t have died. It’s crucial that drivers adhere to the speed limit, wear their seat belts, stay focused on the road, and not drive while drunk or high. The frustrating part about the fatality statistics is that it isn’t a mystery what’s causing them; we know that they are being caused by unsafe driving and poor choices. To solve the problem, the responsibility is on drivers to be safe while on the road. 2023 wasn’t just an outlier, either. Since 2019, traffic fatalities in Washington state have been increasing every year. 2019 saw 538 deaths in accidents, nearly 300 less than in 2023.
